Step Ten

Continued to take personal inventory and when I was wrong promptly admitted it.

Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. Mark 14:38

Addiction cannot be defeated by the human will acting on it’s own. Satan will use the weakness of the human will against you. Satan came against Adam and Eve:

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Genesis 3:1-6

Satan came against Adam and Eve because of the weakness of the flesh. They were tempted with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. These three areas are the foundation of all temptations, and if we don’t watch and pray we will fall into one of these because of our sinful nature.

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12

By the time we get to step 10 our life seems to have taken a turn for the better, our addictions seem to have lessened and we start feeling a sense of freedom. The thing we got to watch for is the over confidence that we might get. Even though the addiction has stopped, Satan will still come with the temptation, telling us that we can handle it now. Like Jesus told us:

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

Satan is out to steal, kill, destroy, this is why we have to watch and pray, and be in the word all the time.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

You will continue to make mistakes as you interact with others, but you should make a commitment to take responsibly for mistakes. That is why it is so important to correct yourself when you start doing something wrong, correct it and keep on going. Bad days will come during recovery. Some days you will want to give up. Some days it will seem you have lost all the ground you had gained. But do not be fooled; do not stop; do not quit! Get back up, re-gather your resources, and move on.
