Step Six

Was ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

It's time now to let Jesus Christ have complete control of our lives as we allow the holy Spirit to guide is in our thoughts and actions.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

After a rigorous emotional and spiritual cleansing of working the steps, we became amazed at the transformation that had occurred inside of ourselves. The addictions tempted us less, and we started to feel better about ourselves, and about others around us. After a period of time we start feeling the old character that we were start creeping back in us, this is when we have to remember what Paul faced and what he said:

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.  For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. Romans 7:14-25

Paul is showing us that he was struggling with inside himself. He says why do I do the things that I know that I shouldn't be doing, and the things I should be doing I don't do. Even though we might not be drinking or taking drugs, we still have the same characteristics because of us being in the world. This is why we have to watch what influences us. Paul tells us:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1-2

Paul went on to explain that even though he wanted to do the right thing the sinful nature that we are born into will try to dominate us. This is when we have to turn our thoughts over to the care of Jesus Christ. That is why Paul said who can take away this sinful thought and then he said Jesus Christ and then Paul says:

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2

When your receive Christ God gave us a new heart. Ezekiel tells us what God says He will do:

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:27

So when ever you get thoughts that sometimes will come because of our nature, remember that we are changed, and all we have to do is put our thoughts on Jesus for the Bible says:

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Don't give in, don't give up, just submit to Jesus and the word of God, and the old characteristics will leave. Remember that submission is the key to your authority over any situation you may be in. The word tells us:

Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. Psalm 37:4-5
