Step One

Admitted that I was powerless over the thing that was causing my life to become unmanageable

Powerless means - without ability, helplessness

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12

There is a thing called the monkey trap. It is used to trap monkeys in the wild and bring them into captivity. It is made by drilling a hole in a coconut just large enough to fit a monkey’s hand. Next they clean the inside out like a pumpkin, then fill the inside with bright shiny little rocks that will attract the monkey’s curiosity. A hook and chain are then attached to the top of the coconut, then the chain is attached to a tree. The monkey sees the bright colored stones and reaches in to grab hold of them. As the monkey grabs the tempted stones, a fist is being made, and it is larger than the hole. The monkey can not get his hand out. It is trapped holding onto the things that look good. This is what Satan does to us. Jesus tells us:

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

Satan is out to rob you of your health, rob you of your finances, rob you of your possessions, and rob you of your relationships. He is out also to destroy you. Destroy in the Greek means to cease to exist, as if it never was. He wants you to feel that you don't even matter.

Satan wants you to depend on yourself, so that you will try to take care of the problem you are facing. How many times have you tried to do something that you thought would give you peace and prosperity, and yet instead of of peace and prosperity, you ended up with pain and sorrow.

Lot of times we are like the greedy monkeys, holding on to something and still thinking that we are free. This is when Satan has you in a trap, because of the love that we have with the things of the world. The Bible tells us:

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1John 2:15-16

Satan is out to deceive you, so that you will end up destroying yourself. When people want to find peace and comfort, they turn to the things that the world has to offer, such things as alcohol, drugs, sex, and gambling. Satan uses alcohol and drugs as an imitation of the Holy Spirit. These things make you feel good for a while, but in time, that feeling leaves, and misery takes it's place

What are you holding on too?

That thing you are holding on too, is it helping you to be free, or has it got you held captive?

The first step is realizing that you cannot deny that you have a problem and that it is controlling your life. Do not allow yourself to be deceived. Satan is not your friend: he will not give you anything that is good. Remember, he is nothing but a liar. Jesus tells us about him:

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44

We allow ourselves to become influenced by the thoughts and imaginations that Satan gives us. We start believing the things that he tells us, such things like, there is no way out, nothing is going to be accomplished, whatever you try to do will be impossible for you. The word says:

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13

It is time to stop listening to Satan and admit to our problems, and hand it over to Jesus Christ, for he tells us:

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
